REPORT BACK

Fundraising Chair – Mrs. Marina Burke

Monies raised during last year 2007 was +- R380 000.00.  Thanks again to all who worked so hard to achieve this & also a big thanks you to Brigitte & her tuck shop moms.

Mr John Mapstone  a new grade 1 parent has a presentation for fundraising.  His concept “Finds through Flying” : Each learner to give a donation of +- R20.00 & thereby receives a ticket, for about 1000 learners we would then make +-R20 000.00.  We could then have a lucky draw & those winning tickets  would then fly in a helicopter, they can fly about 18 learners & 6 teachers -  all admin work will be covered by monies raised.  We could use them at all our fun days & also at our Golf day.  The 1st  24 golfers who paid their fees could go on a helicopter flight overlooking the golf course.  They have done a few schools in the Alberton area, we would be able to contact them for a referral.  Mr Mapstone was thanked, proposal has been noted & this will be discussed at SGB meeting 28th January 2008.

Mr Mapstone then excused himself from the meeting.

Principal – Mr. Trevor Thom

Mr. Thom welcomed the committee & thanked all parents & teachers for attending.  Please encourage other grade 1 parents to also get involved.  Our two learnership students have now qualified & they are now full time teachers.  When I spoke to them they also mentioned that the adjustment was easier & pleasant because of their relationship with the school.  We have 5 learnership students this year.

Miss Bloemstein is the only new educator & she is teaching the grade 7’s.  This year we have a pilot project where we have split the grade 7 boys & girls.  It seems to be working well so far.  Enrolments have also gone well.  We have 885 learners & we try to keep the junior classes smaller than the senior ones.  Our theme for this year is “Attitude & Gratitude” we are a big family at Hurlyvale Primary School & families should respect & thank one another at all times.  We should also acknowledge each others good deeds.  Because of all the rain our cricket pitch & fields are water logged.  We have not been able to start our extra curricular activities because of the heavy rains, we plan to start as soon as the rain has cleared & the fields are a bit drier.  I would like to inform you about the new Education Act – we are allowed to search all learners for drug use.  Mr Spaarwater is in charge of the Code of Conduct & will have to re-adjust it soon.  Hester Muller from Harmelia Pre Primary is also attending fundraising meeting.  Because we are involved with Harmelia Pre Primary I have decided to invite her to attend our fundraising meetings, what ever activities we have, Hester will also advertise them at her school.

Fundraising Events

1st Term

Big Walk – Saturday 15th March 2008

Stall holders – Mini marketers have already been contacted – a fee of R100.00 will be charged per stall.  The flyers & sponsorship forms will go out – 20th February 08. Parents were asked if they would ask friends & family members if they would be interested to book a stall for the morning.  We have already booked a Chip & Dip for the day.  Parents were asked to assist with this event.

2nd Term

Camp Out – Saturday 10th May 08

(Alternative date : 17th May 08)

This years camp out will be in the form of a “Bring & Braai”. Camp sites will be charged at R150.00 per site for a family of 4 (2 adults, 2 children), we will have a tuck shop open for the children.  Hot beverages will be sold on the Sunday morning.  A request was made for caravans, those that wont to camp out in style.  This will be discussed at a SGB level, parents will be advised.  The idea is to rough it up with the kids for one night of the year sleeping on the Hurlyvale Primary School field.

Spellathon -  26th May 08

Sponsorship forms will go out prior to the spellathon.

3rd Term

Golf Day –  Friday  -  22nd August 08

Golf Day already booked at Modderfontein Golf Club. We are looking for someone to co-ordinate & run with this.  Anyone interested in the golf day please contact me (Marina Burke 083 4160106)  We also need to start early with collecting prizes & get sponsors.  We have left it a bit late in the past & because Laura James ran with doing the golf day & she had lots of good contacts, Laura has moved on to high school, so we have very big shoes to fill.  A big thanks to those who indicated that they would like to assist with the golf day. (Vinette Chandler, Trevor Daysson, Hester Muller, Vanessa Hall & Mike Farmer)

4th Term

Carnival Day  -  Saturday -  25th October 08

This is a new project that we would like to do this year.  Because it is a huge project we would like to start our arrangements early.  We will be needing a lot of small prizes & if all classes can start now already to collect them it would make things a lot easier.  I spoke to all the teachers, if they can please co-ordinate this & get parents & learners in their class to work together to make carnival day a success.

The idea is to decide about the kind of stall each class will run with, get 5 parents to assist.  You need not physically do all the work but co-ordinate it.  Because teachers have more contact with parents, we would like to get them involved, teachers are our only means of getting parents involved.  There are lots of ideas for a carnival day, please get ideas together & this will be discussed at the next fundraising meeting.  We would like to make this our big money spinner this year.  I am open to all ideas, please feel free to contact me on my cell or email me.
