Leadership programme

At Hurlyvale Primary School, our Leadership policy is taken from the State’s policy of   co-operative governance. Learners have the opportunity to develop leadership abilities in a myriad of ways.

In Grade 6, learners have the opportunity to serve as Media Monitors, Scholar Patrol Monitors, Catering Monitors, Aviary Monitors or First Aid Monitors.

In Grade 7, the learners are split into Auxiliary Monitors and General Monitors. Auxiliary monitors fulfil portfolios such as: Scholar Patrol Captains, Catering Captains, Audio-Visual monitors, First Aid Captains, Tuck Inn monitors and Computer monitors.  Auxiliary monitors receive the necessary training to perform their duties (e.g.: First Aid captains attend basic first aid training course).

The General monitors are randomly split into 3 groups and serve for a term. These monitors rotate duties weekly.

Each group of Grade 7 monitors is treated to a leadership camp. They are given practical problems to solve, with reviews and discussions around basic Leadership principles.

This co-operative, participative approach to leadership has the dual benefits of inspiring the learners to become personally involved in maintaining and improving the ethos of the school; develop leadership skills, problem solving skills and social skills in a hands-on interactive way.
