Additional Policies

Early Departures
![]()
Learners will be allowed to leave school early only in exceptional cases. In
the interests of safety, learners will not be allowed to walk home nor to wait
for parents at the gate. Parents must report to the office. Learners will then
be called from the classroom. Parents are required to sign a release form before
the learner may leave the school grounds.
Medical
![]()
Our Policy involves the following:
a) Should a child feel ill at school the parents will be notified.
The parent is then expected to collect the child.
b) Serious injuries will be dealt with by the Edenvale Paramedics.
Parents will be informed immediately.
N.B. Always inform the Administrative Staff about change of address, telephone
numbers, etc. Do not send children to school who are obviously ill.
The following must be brought to the school's attention:
a) children on medication
b) allergies
c) epilepsy
d) hemophilia
e) diabetes
f) serious asthma cases or any other disease which may place the child's life in
danger.
Children who have Medic-Alert bracelets\discs must wear them at all times.
Grade 1 - on arrival
![]()
Parents of Grade One learners are advised to encourage their children to go
off with their new friends when they arrive at school. Parents who linger cause
anxiety in their child.
Parents evenings and the issuing of reports
![]()
At the end of the first two terms (on dates to be advised), Parents' Evenings
are organized and the opportunity for general discussion about educational
progress is afforded. A notice will be circulated to parents each term, advising
them on the issue of reports.
Other Parent Information Meetings are also organized to impart necessary
information to parents.
Parents are urged to make every effort to attend these meetings as it is crucial
that they are well-informed at all times regarding aspects of their
child's\children's education.
Test and Examinations
![]()
Continuous assessment in the form of short tests is conducted throughout the
year. Examinations are written by Grade 6 and Grade 7 learners only. Examination
timetables are issued in advance. Learners who are absent during tests or
examinations must produce a medical certificate. Alternative arrangements for
these learners to write the tests or examinations will be made by the class
teacher. (See also paragraph No. 20: School Attendance).
Textbooks, exercise books and stationary
![]()
Text books, readers and Media Centre books (Library books) are merely on loan
and remain the property of the school. Great care must be taken when using such
books. Books that are damaged, lost or defaced will have to be replaced. All
readers and text books are to be covered in a durable clear plastic. Lists of
stationery requirements are issued to parents at the end of each year. Parents
are to ensure that their children have the correct stationery throughout the
year.
School Bags
![]()
Because of the high cost of books, each learner must have a suitable
reinforced school bag for carrying his\her books. No slogans or stickers are to
appear on the bag. Please mark suitcases and sports bags with your child's name.
Transfer to other schools
![]()
If a learner has to be transferred to another school, the school must be
notified in writing, well in advance. A transfer card will be made out and will
be issued to the child once all school property such as text books, library
books, etc. have been returned to the school.
School Assembly
![]()
Assemblies are held every Thursday for Seniors (grades 4 to 7) and every
Friday for Juniors (grades 1 to 3) between 07:55 and 08:25.

School Attendance
![]()
School attendance is compulsory. All absences must be explained in writing on
the day the learner returns to school. If a learner is absent for 3 days or
more, such absences must be supported by a medical certificate. Medical and
dental appointments must, where possible, be arranged outside of school hours.
When this is absolutely impossible, a letter of request must be submitted to the
Principal and the learner must be collected by the parent, personally, from the
office.
Learners in the Intermediate Phase who are absent on scheduled test\examination
dates must either provide a medical certificate. Failure to do so will result in
a zero for the test\exam.
Attendance at school functions, such as concerts, inter-house galas and
athletics is compulsory. Learners who cannot attend for legitimate reasons may
be excused, providing they submit a letter from their parents.
Entering and Leaving the school premises
![]()
Learners may use the St Andrew Road, Gibson Road and Cheshire Road gates. The
scholar patrol crossings must be used. The main entrance in St Andrew Road is
out of bounds, unless the learner is accompanied by his\her parent - and then
only for a special appointment.
Foundation Phase learners being collected by After-Care Centers are met at the
Gibson Road gate at 13:05.
All Grade One and Grade Two learners are dismissed at the Gibson Road gate.
Grade One and Grade Two learners whose parents have arranged for them to be
supervised in a waiting class may not leave the classroom before the appointed
time.
The gates in St Andrew Road are locked at 14:15. Parents and learners are
requested to use the gate in Gibson Road.
Parents are requested not to wait near the classrooms for their children at the
end of the school day as this distracts both educators and learners..
Homework
![]()
Homework should be regarded as an extension of class work. It is the
responsibility of all learners to ensure that homework given by the teacher is
completed by the due date. Parents are asked to ‘supervise' the homework and NOT
to do it for the children. This defeats the whole object of such homework.
Parents should make it their own policy to check homework and books on a regular
basis and not leave it to Parents' Evening.
Advance notice is given of assignments, projects, etc. and learners should
ensure that they plan their work so that it is not left to the last moment. Each
learner is required to purchase a suitable homework diary. In this diary all
work is recorded and parents are requested to sign these diaries daily once they
are satisfied that all the work has been correctly completed.
Bicycles
![]()
Bicycles remain the sole responsibility of the owner. The school will
endeavor to safeguard bicycles but cannot be held responsible for theft or
damage. Each learner must lock his\her bicycle to the framework of the shed,
using a strong chain and suitable lock. Learners are urged to make use of
helmets, which may be left with the class teacher for safe-keeping
